OLYMPIC FLAME

WINTER OLYMPICS 2002

SALT LAKE CITY - UTAH

The 2002 Olympics, to be held in Salt Lake City in February, 2002, required an Olympic Flame and Alexander Boome Consultants was commissioned to design the Burner and the surrounding fireplaces. The Burner was designed at the firm's offices in Vancouver, B.C. by Alexander Boome in conjuction with our firm, and was constructed by a local contractor. The assembly is in two parts, main burner and backup burner, and is operated from a remote control station. The complete arrangement was tested in Vancouver before shipment to Salt Lake City for installation in the petroglyff figure.  The attached photograph shows the Totem with the petroglyff figure in operation at a test site in the host city.

The Totem is 40 feet high and the flame reaches to a height of 8 feet.  Each burner consumes the equivalent amount of natural gas that would be burned to heat an average house.  Natural gas is being supplied by the local gas company.
