26 heritage houses, in the area known as Mole Hill, are being returned to their original exterior and interior condition and divided up into low cost suites. Cost of the renovation is $21,000,000, all being paid for by the British Columbia Housing Corporation.
The heating is provided by ground source heat pumps, drawing their heat from a series of wells on the various properties, each well going down to a depth of 75 meters. At this depth the temperature is a steady 12 deg.C. The circulating fluid is raised in temperature, by heat pumps, to 52 deg.C and the resultant higher temperature water is distributed to the energy efficient radiation units in each of the suites. The end result is that the buildings will be heated for a fraction of the cost that would be required to heat them by conventional methods.
