Here is an item that was sent to some of us by Johnnie Wortley, one of our long time members, to remind us of the medal we never received; The item consists of the proposed Bomber Command Medal with ribbon, a plate with name, rank and the squadron crest. The lion is a replica of one of the lions around Nelson's Monument in Trafalgar Square. The inscripton on the plate reads "For Devotion to Duty".
HISTORY
Sir Arthur Harris, towards the end of WW2, decided that all members of Bomber Command should receive a medal for their efforts. With this in mind he directed that a medal be produced for this purpose and the Government Department concerned was directed to come up with a design. The design that was most favoured showed a lion standing triumphant over a dragon and two medals were actually produced with the head of the monarchy on the obverse side. It was decided that the ribbon for the award would be composed of red, white and blue stripes and that it would have a clasp denoting either 'AIRCREW' or 'GROUNDCREW'. The award was never officially presented. However, the attached is an unofficial award that was sent out to many deserving members of Bomber Command, both aircrew and groundcrew. The orignal medal design was later used for another of the other WW2 Medals. It would have been a fitting tribute to Marshall of the Airforce, Sir Arthur Harris and to all of his "Young Lions" as he called us.
